Magical Night Under the Stars: "Through the Looking Glass" Gala by Friends of Santa Ana Zoo, Featuring Emmy Award Winner Henry DiCarlo from KTLA, Triumphs Amidst Hurricane Hilary's Grace
The Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ) raises over half a million-net cash every year for the Santa Ana Zoo
The 31st annual Zoofari gala, hosted by the Friends of Santa Ana Zoo, embraced the theme "Through the Looking Glass" this year, with the added stroke of luck as Hurricane Hilary graciously withheld its presence, contributing to the event's resounding success. Over 300 guests attended the sold-out event, which took place at one of the most exotic venues in Orange County, outside and under the stars on the Zoo grounds, on Saturday, August 19, 2023. The non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1972, has helped support and improve the Santa Ana Zoo for over 50 years.
Guests enjoyed a first-class dining experience catered by Parties by Panache with a hosted bar, including a special drink, the "Mad Hatter Cocktail," which consisted of Peach and Blueberry Wine, White Tea, Peach Cranberry Juice, and 7-up, with a cluster of cut up fruit for flavor.
R.W.B. Party Rentals provided unique decorations with various scenic designs reminiscent of Alice's journey to find the white rabbit. From cut-out large colorful directions, life-sized multicolored mushrooms, and the guests coming in themed outfits, it was undoubtedly a celebration of someone's "unbirthday."
Guests began the night greeted by various animals and their docent "handlers." A centipede, an armadillo, and a blue-tongued skink were just some wildlife that welcomed everyone as they entered the Santa Ana Zoo. Guests were also privileged to tour the Zoo grounds and ride the Fifty Monkey Ferris Wheel and visit the primates the Santa Ana Zoo is famous for. The newly finished Butterfly Habitat was quite the place to be, and guests could check the status of the new Giant River Otter Habitat and Primate Trails Experience being created.
Emmy Award winner, Meteorologist, and sportscaster for the KTLA 5 Morning News Henry DiCarlo served as emcee and auctioneer for the evening.
Honored this year were three dedicated volunteers, two of whom have recently passed on but never forgotten. First up was Lori Babcock, who was honored for her instrumental leadership in bringing the Santa Ana Zoo's special events to the next level as a beloved Board Member. Her daughter, Donna Czekalski gave a tearful acceptance speech honoring her mother. Kathleen Edman was honored for her support for the past 30 years; her daughter, Shellie Cluett, and son-in-law talked about her love for animals at the Zoo, and when she passed, she was surrounded by blankets and photos of the zoo animals. Ethan Fisher, Director of the Zoo, honored Barbara Heidenreich, who specializes in exotic animals and consults worldwide, working with zoos, universities, veterinary professionals, and conservation projects. She was honored for working with the zoo and creating a successful animal training program for the welfare of the animals.
Hawk Scott, the new Executive Director of Park, Recreation, and Community Services for the City of Santa Ana, came up and thanked many who were there from the City of Santa; he then brought up Fisher for a few major announcements they both had been working on. One was creating a more significant way to find the Zoo by working with Caltrans by changing the name of the street in front of the Santa Ana Zoo to "Zoo Lane" as the new street name for the road formerly known as Elk Lane. It will extend the entire street from S. Lyon Street to past the 55 Freeway and have off and on-ramp signage. Another big announcement was that the Santa Ana Zoo had been working with the Prentice family, and because of how the family sees how much the Zoo has grown, they have released the Zoo of their requirement of always keeping 50 monkeys at the Zoo. This makes way for more flexibility for the best welfare of the animals.
Chaired by Cat Decker, FOSAZ Executive Director, the event netted over $100K, including almost $60K from the silent and live auction. The special Fund-A-Need also raised enough funds to purchase the portable X-ray needed for the Vet Hospital.
"Zoofari's contribution has been essential in generating the necessary funds for various exceptional projects and advancements at our beloved community Zoo. These include educational initiatives, the creation of innovative animal habitats, and significant conservation undertakings." said Decker.
Live auction items were two one-of-a-kind children's Rocking Horses, a "Cheetah" and "Elephant" that were hand-crafted and donated by FOSAZ Board Member Rip Ribble; a Magic Castle evening for four adults donated by the Santa Ana Zoo's resident Magician Jeff LeMasters-Tahir; a Philips 5400 Fully Automatic Coffee & Espresso Machine with LatteGo Coffee Machine donated by FOSAZ Board Member Howard Hall; Henry DiCarlo donated a KTLA one of a kind promo on air with a photo of him; a fantasy flight on the Goodyear Blimp for two; Parties by Panache donated an epicurean five-course gourmet dinner for twelve guests for an in home party; a private tour with Zoo Director Ethan Fisher which would include getting up close and personal with an anteater; and a sensational, deliciously chic, direct from the Italian runway, rosa colored, silk lined, leather Mimi-Mua Firenze tote with a fashion forward, pink paisley scarf donated by FOSAZ Board Member Patty McClendon stuffed with $100 California scratchers (donated by Rib Ribble) and a stack of cash donated from FOSAZ Board Members, Advisory Board Members, and Zoo Staff - totaling over $1500.
After the live auction, guests danced to the dynamic tunes of "Groove Factory!"

Friends of Santa Ana Zoo Raises Significant Funds to Help the Zoo Virtually this Year at "Zoofari Treasure Island Adventure"
The Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ) has announced a significant amount was raised at this year's virtual "Zoofari Treasure Island Adventure." In the face of the global pandemic and Zoo closure, the Friends came up with a very clever idea to handle its black-tie fundraiser. It went virtual!
FOSAZ is the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1972 to support and improve the Santa Ana Zoo. FOSAZ has hosted Zoofari for 27 years at one of the most exotic venues in Orange County, outside and under the stars on the grounds of the Santa Ana Zoo. This year was going to have to be different. The 28th Annual event would be taken into the virtual realm with an online silent auction and Fund-A-Need page. "Zoofari Treasure Island Adventure" ran for 16 days, from August 15 through 31 and had over 2000 guests visit the auction site during that time period. FOSAZ has reported that its net results exceeded even the most optimistic projections of over $35,000 while providing a fun way for guests to stay involved, from the comfort of their own home.
"Virtual Zoofari was amazing and fantastic and definitely one of the most memorable Zoofaris we've ever had!" stated FOSAZ Executive Director, Cathi Decker. "The auction went crazy at the end! All packages went through the roof! It's truly amazing and admirable so many found it within their hearts to either donate an item, bid on an item, bid up an item, or win an item!"
The community really came together in support of the event. Many reported watching those final hours from home, sipping the cocktail of their choice, hoping their bids would hold on for their favorite items.
"Zoofari revenue is important every year to help with the special projects and improvements happening at our favorite community Zoo. We are so thankful for our supporters who helped make this impact as we work on more educational programs, breaking ground on new animal habitats, tackling important conservation initiatives and upgrading service facilities for our guests to use and enjoy," said Zoo Director Ethan Fisher.
Exclusive auction items that were offered included "Keeper for a Day," several special one-on-one experiences with animals like the Anteater and Miniature Donkeys, and a Tory Burch Emerson Garnet Purse and matching clutch donated by FOSAZ Board Member Patty McClendon - stuffed inside was $100 worth of California Scratchers donated by Board Member Rip Ribble and over $1200 cash donated by FOSAZ Board Members, Advisory Board Members, including Joyce Glazier, and Zoo staff.
The Fund-A-Need collected funds for a "Livestock Limo" to transport the livestock in style! Everyone likes to ride in style and the Zoo's pony, donkeys and cow are no different. The gorgeous 2020 Maverick aluminum 2 horse trailer will allow them to travel comfortable when a visit to the animal doctor is needed or in case of an emergency. This part of the auction brought in a significant amount, but the Zoo is still seeking $5000 to close the gap on it. FOSAZ is looking for a donor or donors to help complete the matching amount.
Zoofari is chaired by Cathi Decker and sponsored by FOSAZ, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which has helped support and improve the Santa Ana Zoo for over 45 years. Zoo staff and supporters look forward to the next Zoofari in August of 2021.
Thank you to everyone who helped make our Virtual Zoofari 2020, Treasure Island Adventure, a huge success. It really means a lot and you've made a real difference to the animals and conservation at the Zoo.

Presented by Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ)

The Friends of Santa Ana Zoo, a non-profit organization, hosted the 20th annual Zoofari fundraising black-tie gala for over 350 guests with a 1920's theme entitled "Cat's Meow." Zoofari takes place at one of the most inspiring venues in Orange County, the Santa Ana Zoo.
Guests began the night by sipping cocktails with one special drink appropriately named, "Roarin' Rickey's Fizz" reminiscent of the Bathtub Gin tastings from the 1920's. Attendees also enjoyed inspired decorations by R.W.B. Party Rentals, a large silent auction as well as special visits with the animals. Free valet parking was sponsored by Villa Ford along with a hosted bar by FOSAZ, appetizers and then a delicious gourmet dinner prepared by Parties by Panache. An extraordinary live auction and dancing to the lively tunes of the "Class of 69" followed.
Co-chairs and emcees for the evening were OC Register columnists Frank Mickadeit and Barbara Venezia with Glen Fladeboe as auctioneer. FOSAZ President Debbie Friedman and Executive Director Cathi Decker helped present special honors to Mark and Shio Hui Harrison; Lucille and Mike Harrison; David Exline and Amos Bracero. They were instrumental in bringing the Pavement of Progress team together by meeting with designers, contractors and architects. This project resulted in the pathways and service roads at the Santa Ana Zoo to be eco-friendly and also provide improved accessibility for disabled guests and guests requiring mobile assistance.
A special "reveal" of the Ocelot location where the exhibit "Wild Cats of El Bosque Verde" (Wild Cats of the Green Forest) will be housed was held for the press and VIP's in attendance; this was the first time the public was able to see the exhibit location before it is built.
The event netted about $80,000 this year adding to a total of almost half a million dollars to bring a pair of Brazilian Ocelots to the Zoo. Ocelots are beautiful exotic wild cats from South America, often described as miniature cheetahs. There are currently only 26 Brazilian Ocelots in the United States.
Food for the evening was appropriately named for the 1920's theme, starting with "Flappers and Flyboys" hors d'oeuvres and names such as "Sitting Pretty" Summer Fruit Salad, "Bee's Knees" Petite Filet Mignon, "Putting on the Ritz" St. Peter's Fish, "Pos-i-lute-ly (Nifty)" Roasted New Potatoes, and "Don't Know From Nothing" Grilled Vegetable Napoleons guests were delighted with the fun.

The final Live Auction item was a straight donation where all were encouraged to raise their "boarding pass" to help with the airline expenses to bring the Ocelots to the Santa Ana Zoo. Money raised will help to fund the travel costs as well as the initial medical expenses of the two Ocelots.

Zoofari 2011 Gets Spotted! - Huge Success for the Zoo
Returning for the 19th year, the Zoofari gala fundraiser on Saturday, August 27, hosted almost 400 guests who were treated to a "wild" time with the theme, "Get Spotted at the Zoo!" The fabulous party in Orange County celebrated the night under the stars at the Santa Ana Zoo where guests began the night by sipping cocktails with one special drink appropriately named, "Kitty-Cat Cocktail". Attendees also enjoyed a large silent auction as well as special visits with the animals.
Guests appreciated free valet parking, sponsored by Villa Ford and a hosted bar by Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ), appetizers, and then a delicious gourmet dinner prepared by Parties by Panache. An extraordinary live auction led by auctioneer Glenn Fladeboe and dancing to the lively tunes of the "Class of 69" followed.
Co-chairs this year were KOCE's Ed Arnold and philanthropist Sandy Segerstrom Daniels. Rip and Karen Ribble were honored; Rip for his years of service and generosity as well as his help with building the Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo into a very proactive, professional group and Karen, who has always been at Rip's side. Whatever project Rip begins, Karen is always there to do whatever she can to provide her support and assistance.
A loving tribute was also held for two longtime friends of the Santa Ana Zoo: Chuck Dryer and Bud Hurlbut. Both passed away this last year and will be greatly missed; their legacy at the Santa Ana Zoo will live on for decades to come.
The event raised over $80,000, a record amount, well over this year's goal and last year's totals. The money raised will be used to bring a pair of Brazilian Ocelots to the Zoo. Ocelots are beautiful "exotic" wild cats from South America, often described as "miniature cheetahs." There are currently only 26 Brazilian Ocelots in the United States, and we will soon be adding two more to that total.
Hot Egyptian Nights!" Nets Around $100,000 for 2010 Annual Zoofari Presented by Friends of Santa Ana Zoo
Returning for the 18th year, the Zoofari gala fundraiser hosted around 350 guests who were treated like royalty with the theme, "Hot Egyptian Nights!" The best party in Orange County celebrated the night under the stars at the Santa Ana Zoo. Guests were greeted with a special drink appropriately named, "Cleopatra's Kiss". Attendees enjoyed a large silent auction area as well special visits with the animals; however, the highlight of the evening proved to be the camels! Brought in for the summer, Noah and Kaleb posed for a special keep sake photo with each guest.
This year attendees enjoyed free valet parking sponsored by Villa Ford along with a hosted bar by Foster's Wine Estates Americas, appetizers and then an exquisite gourmet dinner prepared by Parties by Panache. An extraordinary live auction and dancing to the lively tunes of the "Class of 69" followed. Back this year by popular demand were the evenings co hosts; KOCE's Ed Arnold and philanthropist Sandy Segerstrom Daniels with Chuck Dreyer returning as auctioneer. Frank Mickedeit, from the OC Register was honored for his work promoting the zoo while "living in a cage". The event netted almost $100,000 to help contribute to the much needed animal commissary and Zoo improvements.
Walking into the event area, guests were treated to an Egyptian paradise with decorated palm trees, golden Pharohs, mummy tombs, and Egyptian wall decor. The tables were exquisitely decorated with purple and blue table cloths trimmed in gold. Center pieces were hand-made decorated wooden camels, courtesy of Rip Ribble, President of Friends of Santa Ana Zoo.
Food for the evening was appropriately named for the theme, with "Valley of the Kings" Mediterranean Platter;"Treasures of the Sphinx" Mini Chicken B'stillas; "Rosetta Stone" Cumin Cured Salmon Bruschetta; "Cleopatra's Purse" Falafel in Mini Pitas and "Mummy" Bacon Wrapped Dates Stuffed with Blue Cheese. Dinner was served with "Pyramid" Salad; "Pharaoh's Feast" Spicy Egyptian Chicken with Figs, Dates and Apricots; "Nile" Toasted Couscous Pilaf and "Egyptian" Ratatouille. Dessert was fabulous with "Camel Caravan" Flourless Chocolate Cake; "Desert Decadent" Brown Sugar Meringues and "Oasis" Fresh Berries. The Melting Pot in Irvine was stationed by the coffee bar serving plates of bite size fresh strawberries, Rice Krispie treats and brownies to dip in a decadent pot of fondue.
Ribble welcomed everyone to this special evening celebrating the uniqueness of the Zoo. All the proceeds from Zoofari will be going to help rebuild the commissary where they keep the food for the animals. It's necessary to replace out dated appliances for more energy-efficient equipment as well have a bigger storage facility as the Zoo increases its animal collection. Ribble then introduced the co hosts for the evening Ed Arnold and Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, where along with the Zoo Director Kent Yamaguchi, presented a beautiful bouquet of roses to Auction Chair Donel Wiles and Executive Director Cathi Decker thanking them for another successful Zoofari.
Frank Mickedeit was then called up to be honored for his part helping the Zoo. Mickedeit stayed three nights "living in a cage" and his experience was captured on a webcam as well as documented in his daily column for the OC Register. He thanked everyone for their support while ribbing a few people with his comedic style.
Opportunity prizes were picked with Monica Kim winning golf for four at Candelwood; Judy Larios was excited to receive the Tiffany jewelry; and Del and Carole Stagg were the lucky winners for a Disneyland package.
Chuck Dreyer then worked his magic during the live auction; this was his 15th year helping the Zoo. Outstanding priceless items were a Hug and Snuggles Tour of the Zoo, which takes the winner on a private behind-the-scenes encounter to help feed and care for the animals and then lunch with the Zoo Director which sold five times at $400 dollars each. A lavish four-course with wine pairing dinner for eight in the luxurious surroundings of your home prepared by Parties by Panache was a steal for $800. Kent Yamaguchi was the lucky winner of a four day, three night adventure to the "Grand Dame of the Desert" - the historic Arizona Biltmore for two which includes air fare, rental car, and a visit to the Phoenix Zoo that includes a behind-the-scenes animal encounter. He paid $1200 for the complete package. A 4 day, 3 night romantic rendezvous to the Inn at Opolo Bed & Breakfast with a private tour of Opolo Vineyards and private wine tasting at Eberle Winery then one night Pelican Cove Inn in Cambria with a 2 day pass to Hearst Castle went for $1250 to Barry and Cathi Hofstetter. Peggy Turk from Corona del Mar was excited to win "The Frank Experience" for 4 at the zoo. The package was inspired by Mickedeit's days living in a primate cage which went for $1500. Mark Harrison from Corona del Mar was the lucky winner to the 3 night tasting tour of Napa Valley with golf via a private jet, paying $6,000. Dreyer then asked everyone to help fund the walk-in freezer that is badly needed for the zoo. Raised was $11,000 and those who contributed received the decorative hand made camel center piece.
Cathi Decker, Executive Director said the silent auction was very successful, especially with items such as the "wish lists" for the animals being a big hit. "Things like mist systems, field trips for the kids as well as items needed for the commissary are very needed. Those folks who purchased items for the animals are to be thanked because it's so appreciated".
The evening was a huge hit with attendance, sponsorships and tickets sales up from last year. After the auction, attendees were ready to dance into the night with the great music provided by "The Class of 69". From Chicago to Stevie Wonder, the dance floor was filled with folks dancing to hit songs from the 70's and 80s.

HUGE SUCCESS AT ZOOFARI 2009 "Funky Monkey" THANK YOU !
Funky Monkey was the theme of this year's Zoofari, held on August 22 here at the Santa Ana Zoo. Zoofari has become one of the most enchanting, exciting, and entertaining fundraising events in Orange County, all thanks to you!
Zoofari proceeds from this year are being used to upgrade our Zoo's commissary, where the food for the animals is prepared, along with other important Zoo upgrades in preparation for our upcoming AZA inspection.
We'd like to thank our Co-Chairs Ed Arnold and Sandy Segerstrom Daniels as well as our Master of Ceremonies Chuck Dreyer. This year, we honored Lana Chandler, the Del Oro Pacific Railroad Club, and the Santa Ana Elks Lodge No. 794.
Also, we must mention the incredible amount of work a very creative and dedicated Zoofari committee put into making this event happen. The Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park could not continue its development into one of the premier small zoos in the country without the support of its generous donors, Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ) and its board of directors, and the substantial investment from the City of Santa Ana in providing the Zoo's operating budget. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency (PRCSA) also provides extensive operational support through its Administration/Design Division and Park Services Maintenance Division. The Zoo is proving to be a model of private and public collaboration for providing top-quality care for the animals we maintain, outstanding educational and conservation programs, as well as a beautiful zoological and botanical garden for our community to enjoy.
There is still much more to be done, as the possibilities are endless and exciting. With the outstanding success of Zoofari 2009, we are already planning for an even better Santa Ana Zoo.
Thank YOU for your support.
